Course Outline:

Topics covered through the course include:

  • Human Lifespan Development provides pupils with the opportunity to explore how we, as humans, grow and develop throughout our lives and to investigate how the factors are interrelated.
  • Health and Social Care Services and Values will help prepare pupils for a career in any area of health and social care. The values that are described in this unit may also be applied to daily life. Pupils will be given the opportunity to discuss the care values that underpin current practice in health and social care. This unit includes information on what is meant by care values and other terms such as inclusion, non-discriminatory practice, a duty of care and a person-centred approach.
  • Effective Communication in Health and Social Care will enable pupils to understand the importance of effective communication in health and social care settings. Pupils will investigate the different forms of communication which may be used in health and social care.
  • The Health and Wellbeing external component builds on knowledge, understanding and skills acquired and developed in Components 1 and 2. Learners will explore how factors can affect an individual’s health and wellbeing positively or negatively. Learners will interpret indicators that can be used to measure physiological health, interpreting data using published guidance and explore the features of health and wellbeing improvement plans. Learners will explore the obstacles that individuals can face when implementing these plans and how they may be mitigated. This unit is assessed through external examination

 

Expectations:

Home learning will usually focus on one hour study per week. This will incorporate a range of reading and/or writing tasks, research study or coursework preparation, development or improvement. The BTEC Health and Social Care course has very strict deadlines that pupils must meet in order to pass the assignments.

 

Career Opportunities:

This course will support pupils who have an interest in pursuing a career in the service sector including health, social care and early years services. Previous pupils who have gained this qualification have gone on to an advanced qualification in Health and Social Care in the Sixth Form and then on to university to study Paramedic Science, Midwifery, Nursing, Social Work and Early Years Education.
